CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
After Bill went off, them deputies come outa the office anâ commenced to makinâ a fuss. Marion stood it for a minute or two, then started off toward the Victory. I fell in with him.
We had just set, anâ ordered pie anâ coffee when Homer come in, packinâ that Sharps a his, anâ took a seat.
âThat was some shootinâ,â he said.
âI doan understand how come that fella, with three of us standinâ there like we was, anâ more inside, woulda gone for his gun like he done,â I said. âIt doan make no sense to me.â
âBill flinched him,â Marion said.
I didnât know what he meant anâ I told him so.
âArkansas Bill Cole is a olâ bull, boy,â Marion said. âThat feller come up here anâ didnât show no respect to him, settinâ there on that horse cocky like he was, smilinâ anâ all. A man like Bill Cole, skillful as he is, doan cotton to that kinda behavior from somebody. He knowed them other three warnât slingers or nothinâ. Pistoleers doan drive no wagon for a cripple or lift one up anâ down from a buckboard neither. You coulda done for them boys right smart. Plus, the dead feller was scared. Thatâs why he was smilinâ. Thatâs also why he had the coach gun across his saddle. Stupid. Tryinâ to balance that shotgun like he done was just a distraction. Folks like Bill donât let theyselves git distracted. All Bill had to do was take in a short breath, or just jerk a arm a tiny little bit, or maybe just lift his chin a mite, anâ that fool, beinâ short on confidence like he was, would try for his gun. Make no mistake, Ruben. Bill started it anâ Bill finished it. It warnât nothinâ but murder, boy. Legal murder. Arkansas Bill Cole is harder than hickory.â
âHow come he shot that cane out from under that olâ fella?â
ââCause he couldnât shoot Waxler hisself. That olâ man was no threat to him, but he had ta do somethinâ, so he put him down the only way he could.â
âAnâ because he was just showinâ off,â Homer said. âOlâ man Waxler ainât used to nobody standinâ up to him. Heâs had it purty much his way for quite a spell. He come in here makinâ threats anâ shit, anâ Bill shoots his slinger anâ knocks the olâ boy flat down in the dirt. Got the best of him. That there is whatcha call a unusual development. Waxler is gonna have to study on that some. Anâ word a what happened will spread through his bunch like wildfire. With three shots, Arkansas Bill Cole has created what is knowed as unease among the opposition.â
âThat was some shootinâ,â I said.
Marion nodded. âIt was,â he agreed.
âCould you a done it?â I asked him.
Marion smiled at me then. âDidnât have to,â he said.
